Our Wedding – Part One

From the first glance, or two, you might think I’m the biggest “girly girl” out there.

I could be categorized under the definitions of many female stereotypes –

Hair & Makeup are two of my favorite interests,

I scream at the top of my lungs when I see a cockroach {or almost any other bug  }

And – pink is my favorite color.

But when it comes to the most famous stereotype – the wedding frenzy, I’m the least “girly” possible.

You may be surprised to hear, but I never dreamed about my wedding day.

I won’t deny that like many other girls I grew up on classics like Cinderella, Snow White and their princess squad – their lives turned upside down when they meet Prince Charming.

But for some reason that stereotype didn’t really catch me.

It’s not that I wasn’t interested in being in a relationship or getting married, I was just never pressured about having a boyfriend or a wedding.

I’m really not anti-marriage, but my {indifferent?} attitude towards this event managed to raise {almost} everyone’s eyebrows and the question everyone asked from the second we got engaged “are you excited?” turned into “you still aren’t excited?!” as we got closer to the wedding.

Daniel and I met almost five years ago at a mutual friend’s pool party, and almost a year ago we got engaged in one of the most beautiful places in the world.

Honestly, I was pretty surprised since we never discussed marriage, but I always knew we had something special and that it will last forever – with a proposal or without it.

So of course I said yes, and the wedding planning started.

Continuing my opening monologue, I must admit that I’m not the type for Israeli weddings.

Massive events with hundreds {if not thousands} of guests really isn’t my thing and the classic Israeli wedding halls – with purple lighting isn’t really my style.

Weddings abroad, which are much more exclusive and chic in my opinion, always appealed to me more with their special charm.

But of course, the more progress we made with the wedding planning, it became clear to me that I won’t have the wedding I imagined.

If I thought I was going to have a small event, a wedding in Greece or even just the two of us flying and getting married abroad – then little by little it became clear to me that even though they say that the wedding day is mainly for the bride, I really had no say in something so important to me.

So of course I eventually had to compromise, and although we tried cutting the guest list as much as possible, we ended up inviting around 370 guests.

Oh well.

{Spoiler alert : I ended up having a lot of fun  }.

Up to here with the least fun part about planning our wedding 😉

In the first post in the wedding series I chose to focus on the wedding preparations and the morning of the wedding, and in the next post I’ll tell you more about the hall, the ceremony and the actual party in detail.

THE PREPARATIONS

So like I said, the wedding didn’t really excite me, but if I’m arranging an event – whether it’s a birthday, a bachelorette party or any other occasion – it’s important to me that the event will be the best I can arrange.

We knew exactly what we wanted, and since we both have more or less the same taste, you could say that we closed everything fast without too much hesitation.

Things that other people may look at as not-so-important {mainly in Israel} actually mean a lot to  me, like the “Save The Date” that I made by myself after a lot of thought and wedding invitations by Michal Ben Abir that matched our wedding’s style and  atmosphere.

PHOTOGRAPHY

The first vendor we signed with was the stills photographer Haim Afriat – I followed his work for two years and I had no doubt we’ll choose him for the most important role in our wedding {in my opinion}.

If we ended up getting married in Israel then at least our pictures should have a vibe from abroad, right?

The videography wasn’t really on my mind and to be honest, I even considered completely skipping it. We searched for a videographer for so long and we watched so many videos and nothing seemed good enough anymore.

Along came Polly After I gave up, Daniel found “Studio Polly”. She film and edit super cute indie style videos. No less important than the fact that we thought her videos were charming, she was amazing on our wedding day and really blended into the event and managed to capture the most exciting and special moments!

Even after sending the edited videos, when we asked for a few small changes in the song choices, she did it happily and she was very understanding.

DRESS & ACCESSORIES

The wedding dress is considered the cherry on top for the bride among all of the wedding arrangements and it’s also one of the biggest drama causes when dealing with the event.

However, I decided to take the whole dress issue in a very easy-going way.

It was clear to me that I won’t go crazy with the dress, and that I’ll most likely buy a ready-made dress and not a custom-made dress according to my sizes.

Since I live in Eilat {isolated part on the south of Israel}, far from all of the wedding gown stores, I did all of my searching online.

I looked at Urban Brides blog, on Facebook, and I even entertained myself with the idea of ordering a dress from abroad online.

I eventually found two styles I really liked – one from FishnDag and the second from Alon Livne’s bridal collection and I set appointments only in these two designer’s studios.

The first studio I went to was FishnDag, and after debating a bit I left the studio with my wedding dress {and it wasn’t even the one I originally went to try on there!}.

The dress was exactly what I was looking for – clean and not flamboyant, two pieces with a long tutu skirt and made from a special fabric. The dress also came with a long and beautiful veil that was sewn from the same fabric the skirt was made from which completed the look.

Things were very easy when it came to my shoes, too, and I decided to wear cream-colored heels by Roni Kantor that I already wore to this production. Of course I couldn’t survive on high heels all day, and after the Chuppah I quickly changed to white Havaianas flip flops which completely disappeared under the skirt’s rich tulle.

The accessories I chose to wear were my late Grandmother’s beautiful gold vintage bracelet and gold pineapple earrings I bought at the Jaffa port right before the wedding.

GETTING READY

Unlike many other couples, Daniel and I didn’t separate the night before the wedding, and instead we pampered ourselves with a suite at the amazing Brown Beach House Hotel, which is also where I got ready in the morning along with my beloved bridesmaids {you can read the full post about our stay at the hotel here}.

The morning of the wedding was absolutely perfect – we started off with a double-date for breakfast at the hotel’s restaurant with my sister and her husband, Sharon and Dekel. Daniel left after the meal and I started with the hair and makeup preparations for the wedding, accompanied by a rich mimosa bar and an exaggerated sushi delivery to make sure we won’t be hungry

The amazing Nurit Chen was in charge of my makeup. I met Nurit long before the wedding and I always loved her style – in two words I could define it as “not plastered”, but it’s much more than that – it’s simply “flawless”.

I met Nurit around a month before the wedding for a makeup trial and just a few days before the wedding I decided to completely change the makeup style we originally had planned. I sent her a picture for reference and I completely trusted her that it will come out exactly how I wanted it to, and I wasn’t wrong – she’s a master!

The makeup was super resistant and lasted through all of the kissing during the reception, the Chuppah and even sweating on the dance floor {and it’s not surprising since she uses great brands}.

I was just as indecisive when it came to the hair-do, which Kosta Vino was in charge of. I decided on one hair-do during the trial and changed my mind before the wedding {such a Libra!}.

It was important to me to keep my hair natural looking and I really liked the result.

My hair lasted very nicely until the dancing started and then things went downhill {something you have to take in account when you decide to go for a hairstyle with all of your hair down, and then go crazy on the dance floor  }.

To all girls who have bangs like me, I strongly recommend bringing a small portable blow-dryer like this or this, to avoid getting to my situation {you’ll see pictures from the dance floor in the next post  }.

Of course the highlight of my hair was the pink balayage that the coloring artist Erez Ivan from Michel Mercier’s hair salon in Tel Aviv did especially for my wedding. I consulted with him before the wedding non-stop regarding the color and I got exactly what I imagined without ruining my hair {he works with a very successful bleaching method and manages to get to very light shades with minimal hair damage}.

After all of the preparations, I met Daniel in the hotel’s beautiful lobby, and from there we continued to take pictures in the pastoral area around our wedding venue.

Since Daniel and I both wanted a big wedding squad {I had 5 bridesmaids – 4 best friends and my sister, and Daniel had 4 groomsmen – 3 best friends and his younger brother} we decided not to give any of them the driving task and we rented a big and luxurious van that took us to the hall and then back to the hotel in Tel Aviv.
