{The holiday season is full of guilt anyway, so at least minimize the damage as much as possible 😉 }

 

This guilt free recipe for apple crisp is just the proof that healthy food can be tasty and easy to prepare. Made from hot apples seasoned with cinnamon and real maple sauce and covered with a thick layer of crispy crumbs – it’s not only healthy and delicious, but it also fills the house with an addictive aroma that will make you want to make it over and over again.

If you’ve been following my blog for a while, you already know that if I make food at home I’ll always prefer it to be healthy, easy and fast to prepare. I prefer to keep the complicated and naughty dishes for the restaurants because I have no desire to spend hours in the kitchen to prepare something that’s gone after one or two meals, and mainly because I prefer to leave my guilty pleasures out of my daily field of vision.

One of those guilty pleasures was until recently a warm and comforting apple crisp. Although it’s a recipe that’s very easy to prepare, it’s usually based on a lot of butter and sugar, so I obviously preferred not to prepare it at home.

Many times, when you want to make a healthy version of a pampering and unhealthy dish, it takes too much work {whether in the kitchen or finding the ingredients} which makes me want to skip the pleasure. Moreover, most of the time, the healthy version doesn’t compare to that of the corrupt one, and ends up being a bummer.

This isn’t the case at all with this apple crisp – it's much healthier {and vegan and gluten-free} and just as tasty!

How did I do it?

1. Coconut oil substitutes the butter and adds a delicate and wonderful flavor that blends wonderfully into the recipe.

2. The processed sugar has been replaced by real and delicious maple syrup {which we have lovingly adopted and is found regularly in our refrigerator since the detox we did}.

3. The white flour was replaced by a combination of oatmeal and almond flour.

In short, this apple crisp really is just as good as the original version, only healthier 😉

The crisp can be served in the dish directly to the table and all the guests can be given spoons for digging in, or if you want a more festive atmosphere, you can simply serve it on personal dishes with great dairy or vegan vanilla ice cream on the side.

◄◄ Guilt Free Apple Crisp ►►

 

Preparation time – 15 minutes + 45 minutes baking

Ingredients –

For the apples :

→ 6 Granny Smith apples {or a different kind if you prefer a sweeter dessert}, cut into cubes {you can peel them but I prefer leaving the peel because of the healthy fibers}

→ 2 tablespoons of real organic maple syrup

→ 3 tablespoons of water

→ 1 tablespoon of cinnamon powder

→ 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg

For the crisp :

→ 1 cup of oats

→ 1/2 cup of almond flour

→ 1/2 cup of walnuts, chopped {you can also use pecans/almonds, or combine them}

→ 1 teaspoon of cinnamon powder

→ 1/4 teaspoon of salt

→ 1 teaspoon of real vanilla extract

→ 1/4 cup of coconut oil

→ 1/4 cup organic maple syrup

For the topping :

→ Amazing vanilla ice cream 🙂

Instructions :

1. Heat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius / 360 degrees Fahrenheit.

2. Mix the apple cubes, maple syrup, water, cinnamon and nutmeg.

3. Move the mixture to a mold greased with a little coconut oil.

4. Mix the crisp ingredients together in a bowl and create crisp.

5. Create a uniform layer of the crisp on the apples.

6. Bake in the oven for 25 minutes, cover the crisp with foil and continue baking for another 20 minutes.

7. Serve the dish directly to the table or in individual bowls with a ball of vanilla ice cream.

Simple, fast and most importantly – delicious!!

    I made it this morning. Absolutely fantastic. I started using coconut oil a few years ago when I dropped all other types of cooking oil, never thought of using it in fruit dishes as a substitute for butter.
