Up until a few years ago, Madrid, the capital of Spain, was not on my radar at all. For some reason I though of it as a rather boring city, one that had nothing exciting about it, and not a destination that was worth flying to.

{SPOILER: I was wrong, big time. The special atmosphere and character of the city, the impressive architecture, its well-maintained parks and its famous tapas have captured my heart and I already dream of returning again}.

Apparently Barcelona, ​​considered by many to be the most beautiful and vibrant city of Spain, has overshadowed Madrid in a way that made it much less attractive and desirable to me, so it wasn't on my backlist until now.

But in the last few years, since I started traveling to destinations that are considered a little less “coveted” {especially during our winter trips that take us where the low-cost flights go}, I've found that any destination can be interesting and fun if you spend a little time planning the trip in advance.

What's more, Madrid is not a remote city, but the capital of Spain – and as much as Barcelona tries to steal the limelight, it has become clear to me that there's not a chance that it's not a bustling and amazing city in its own right.

So when my mom suggested choosing Madrid as the destination for our family girls trip, her proposal was accepted unanimously. After all, the most worthwhile shopping is in Spain, and we did our last girls trip to Barcelona … so it felt like a natural sequel.

This trip was defined as a shopping trip, cafes and good restaurants, but of course I had to dig the internet to find all the things to see and do in Madrid before the trip – and I realized how wrong my perception of Madrid was this entire time … there's so much to do and see in Madrid, that you can visit the city for a whole week and still stick with a taste of more!
