The Top Mistakes Holding Back your Blog from Earning you an Income {and How to Solve Them}

You’ve started your own blog, filled it with content, and made sure to share it on all of your social networks. You’re getting excited because people are beginning to visit your blog more and more, and now you think it’s time to see some profit from your blog. After all, you put in lots of work and share your best tips and guideline, and you feel like you’ve got something good here. But then, you try inserting some Google ads to your blog, sign up to a few affiliate programs, and… nothing!

Think you can identify with this scenario? You’re not the only one.

I see it all the time, bloggers who write excellent content, and still don’t manage to earn more than a few bucks a month from their blog {some of which don’t make even a penny}. It can be very upsetting and frustrating, but most likely it is just that they aren’t taking the right approach to monetizing their digital asset.

If you feel like you’ve tried it all and still are earning no money from your blog, this post is made for you.

You are Not Actively Monetizing your Blog

In order for your blog to earn you money, you need to actively monetize it. This may sound like a given, but you have not earned a penny from your blog yet simply because you have not really tried to do it actively. What do I mean? Well, don’t expect the money to miraculously drop from the sky as soon as you launch a blog and have a couple of followers. That just doesn’t happen. Without affiliate marketing strategies, approaching companies with proposals for professional collaborations, or selling a product or service, your blog will simply not earn money. It doesn't happen automatically – you are required to act. Don’t wait for the opportunities to earn money come to you, rather you should be initiating them yourself.

It's time for you to create a monetization strategy for your blog and stick to it. You can, for example, set up a fixed number of brands you turn to a week, sign up for an affiliate marketing course, or think about selling a product or service. Be realistic, but challenge yourself all the time. It is the only way to progress.

If you’re not sure how to earn money from your blog, you can read this post for further details on the subject.

You Think Inserting Advertisements Is Enough To Earn Money From Your Blog

If you think you're going to earn your first salary from your blog by posting Google ads, I have bad news for you – chances are it will not happen. During the first months of my blog, I tried to make money using Google ads, and in all the months I used their service I did not earn more than 30 cents a day. Yeah, it was that pathetic. I also tried out ad services from other companies and got the same result – low or even no profit. Monetizing your blog with ads pays off only if your blog traffic is really crazy, and I guess you're not there yet – so you should give up this option for the moment.

There are exceptions, though. If there is a company willing to pay you to advertise their brand on your blog, it is an excellent opportunity to earn money through your blog, or, if you’re affiliate in a great program, it might pay off to advertise their banner and get commission from clicks or any purchases made on their site thanks to the ad on your blog.

Your Blog Doesn’t Look Professional

Just like any other business, you need to present yourself professionally if you want to start earning money from your blog. Even if you learn to be an affiliate specialist, advertise quality ads, and offer online products or services relevant to your audience, if your blog doesn’t look good – your blog traffic will stay low and people will quickly lose interest. The branding, design template, and images will be the first thing that people see when they get to you website, so you want to make sure these three things make them want to stay in your site as much as possible.

Not Making Money From Your Blog? These Might Be The Reasons... and I have the solutions! :) #blog #blogger #blogging #money

You Have Not Yet Established Yourself as an Expert in Your Field

Whether you blog about fashion, beauty, food, or travels – in order for people to trust you when it comes to your blog’s niche, and to be potential buyers of the products you either recommend or sell, you first need to establish yourself in your field of expertise. Your blog should be filled with content that bases your knowledge within the niche you have chosen and provide value to your target audience before they can fully trust you.

The Products and Services you are Marketing are Not Relevant to your Target Audience

I am a firm believer in recommending and promoting products that you really like, but if the product is irrelevant to your target audience there is no way it’ll earn you any money. And yes, this applies even if you’ve recommended the best product. For example, If I’m combing my cat, Charlie, with the most amazing comb in the world, what are the chances that a reader of mine will say “Oh! That is precisely what I’m looking for!”? I mean, there's a chance that two or three of my readers who happen to have a cat will read the post and maybe someone will buy the comb. But let's be real – chances are, it will not happen … so all my work on the comb promoting will go down the drain and I'll just get frustrated. Too bad, isn’t it?

A successful blogger is one that knows its target audience. If you don’t, you won’t be able to meet their needs by recommending products that are relevant to them and their budget.

You Don’t Take Your Blog Seriously Enough

If you’re not taking your blog very seriously, meaning you don’t run your blog on an independent platform, you don’t have your own domain, and you’re not willing to invest in workshops and courses that will help your business grow, you can’t really expect your blog to earn you an income. As I’ve said several times before, if you want to earn money from your blog, you have to treat it as a business in every respect, because that's exactly what it should be in order for you to earn money from it. After all, if you won’t take your blog seriously, why would anyone else?

You’re Afraid to Suggest Partnerships to Companies Because Your Blog Doesn’t Have High Traffic Yet

You may think there is no point in offering brand collaborations because they will simply laugh at the meager amount of traffic you currently have on the blog. So – if you’re blog traffic really is low, there is no point in offering companies a payment based collaboration, but what you can do is offer them advertisement on your blog as a barter. It’s a win-win situation. Although you won’t earn real money from it, you will get products to sample and enhance your portfolio without spending any money on products. The advertiser will get the exposure, maybe not the largest amount, but still, and it won’t cost him too much money. Once your portfolio gets built up, along with your blog traffic and experience, you will be able to make use of the connections you’ve made with the brands, and offer them your full paid services.

Your Blog is Still in Diapers

If you’re new to this, and your blog was launched about a month, or even three months ago, most likely you won’t be earning income from your blog. At least not enough to consider the income as a monthly salary. True, there are people who are able to earn lots of money as early as in their blog’s first month, but such a case is usually caused by two factors: experience and luck. Like many other beginner bloggers, I too worked as a freelance content writer and director of social networks for other businesses, until I noticed I began earning enough from my own blog. This is totally normal. After all, it takes time to implement monetization strategies. Even if you do it all perfectly right, it can take a few months until you bear fruit.

I hope you enjoyed this post, and learned from it too!

Finally – When I started, one of the things I hated most, was hearing the phrase “it takes time”. I wanted it all ‘here and now,’ though, as time went by, I realized how unrealistic it was to expect to see results overnight. If you really want your blog to become profitable, and even enough to become your day job, you need to treat it like a business, invest and persevere. In this case, there is no quote better suited than “Dreams don’t work unless you do”. Don’t forget, the reason you started a blog in the first place was because of your passion to blogging, and how badly you wanted to realize your potential, the rest will arrive in due time 🙂
