Lately I’ve come across a new makeup technique called “Strobing” in blogs, magazines and even on Instagram. This new technique is said to take over the place of the current ruling makeup technique – “Contouring”.
So what is the “Strobing” technique and why should you adopt it?
Despite what many people think, “Strobing” isn’t a new makeup technique at all – it’s just making a major comeback from the 70’s.
Think disco balls, sequins and glitter in the discotheque style of that decade and you'll get the next hot thing in the makeup field.
“Strobing” {from the word strobe = flash} is actually a French makeup technique used to achieve younger looking skin that shines and has a natural glow, by emphasizing facial features that “highlight” certain areas of the face.
Now don’t get me wrong {G-d forbid}, the goal isn’t to turn your face into a shiny disco ball, or to get a sweaty and greasy look. Not at all.
The whole idea behind this technique is “highlight” certain areas of the face where the light hits naturally: the center of your forehead, brow bone, cheekbones, bridge of the nose, slight dent above your lip known as Cupid’s bow and the edge of your chin.
This makeup technique will make your face look fresh and healthy instantly, without a lot of effort.
I like calling this technique “facial highlights for lazy people”, because unlike “contouring” which requires a lot of time, the second you understand the “strobing” technique you’ll be able to apply your makeup perfectly in just a few minutes.
To master this technique without looking like I just ran a marathon, it’s very important to get to know your facial structure and the types and quantities of products that you have to use to get that glowing look.
Much to my relief, “Bobbi Brown” offers a variety of makeup classes in their stores {including short and free ones – really worth it!} and they recently started a new special class that teaches this hot new technique. They invited me to try it in their branch in Eilat to review it for you
I went to the class with mixed feelings – on the one hand this is a makeup technique that’s getting a lot of spotlight lately and that’s starring on fashion runways and in the top magazines, on the other hand, I connected “strobing” to a shiny and sweaty look – the kind I have to deal with during most summer days due to my oily skin type.
At the end of the day I discovered that even though I try avoiding the shiny and sweaty skin look, I really love this trend, as long as it’s done the right way that suits your skin type and facial structure.
A Bobbi Brown makeup artist taught me everything I need to know about this technique during a 45 minute lesson – starting from cleaning and prepping your face for the makeup, through applying the foundation, recognizing the areas I have to highlight with various products that create the ‘highlighted’ “strobing” look and till the final small but important touches that will make my makeup a lot more professional and glamorous.
The fun part is that this makeup lesson also pays off financially – it costs 350 shekels but you end up getting all the money back to purchase the company’s high-quality products! So it really is a double profit
Honestly, I didn’t know anything about this service before they contacted me and when I left the lesson I was so pleased from the makeup that I was sorry I didn’t have some kind of event or a festive dinner party the same day 😉
What do you think about this new trend?
Do you think it’ll take the place of the “contouring” technique or do you think that it doesn’t have a chance in Israel, unlike in Europe and the United States?
