The Perfect Guide: How to Conceal the Three Most Common Skin Problems

When it comes to nurturing and beauty, makeup helps us conceal redness or any other skin imperfections. All you need to do is find the right concealer and know some great tips about how to use it.

Honestly, I don’t think everyone needs to use concealer or makeup at all on a daily basis. If you are one of those blessed with perfect facial skin – First of all, we’re all jealous ;). Secondly, as the saying goes – if it's not broke, don’t fix it.

But let’s face it – Most of us don’t have perfect skin and there aren’t many days we’re satisfied with the way our skin looks without some makeup on.

Many women only use makeup and are satisfied most of the time with the fact that it makes their skin look even. But we all had those days when our facial skin cries out for help – whether it’s an annoying pimple that decided to appear in the middle of your chin or you just had a wild night out and you woke up with dark circles under your eyes.

This is exactly where the concealer comes into the picture – though it’s similar to makeup foundation to some extent, its texture is denser and therefore it provides excellent coverage even for the most problematic areas of the skin.

So here's my brief guide to conceal the three most common skin problems using concealer the right way, along with steps you can follow to make your face look flawless

How to conceal dark under-eye circles:

The most important thing you need to remember when trying to hide the annoying dark bags under your eyes is that the goal is to make your eyes look brighter. Therefore, I recommend using a light concealer around the eyes combined with a light face powder. However, many women tend to think ‘the lighter = the better,' and that's just not true! To avoid a gray hue under your eyes, you should use a concealer that is half a tone lighter than your skin color, and not more.

It’s also recommended to use an oil-based concealer, because it’s very important to keep the skin moist in the delicate eye area.

In order to neutralize the blue hues of dark circles around the eyes, you should use a concealer with a peach sub-hue {for women with dark or yellowish skin} or a pinkish hue {for women with light skin}.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. First, apply a rich eye cream that will be a good base for the concealer. The skin around the eyes is thin and delicate compared to skin in other areas, which is why it ages faster and over time tends to get transparent and thin {which is what actually creates the dark under-eyes look}. This is a very important step you shouldn’t skip to keep your skin young and fresh for a long time.
  2. If you have a dark blue hue under your eyes that pops out, you should apply a reddish corrector only in that area, before applying concealer. I’ve seen many YouTube videos that show women blotting a little bit of red lipstick on the dark area and it also works. On the other hand, I’m not sure how healthy it is for your skin… If your circles aren’t so noticeable, I recommend you skip this step.
  3. Apply small dots of concealer in the form of an inverted triangle under the eye, start at the inner corner of the eye {the inside of the bridge of your nose}, draw a line toward the outer edge of the eye and create a triangle facing down towards your cheek.
  4. Now, blend the concealer from the outside inward towards your eye. This can be done using a special brush for applying concealer, a damp sponge or even with your fingers.
  5. I recommend gently brushing powder over the concealer to help the concealer set and to prevent it from accumulating in grooves and wrinkles.

Tip : If you would rather blend the concealer with your fingers, like I do, use the ring finger or your pinky, and not the finger next to your thumb, because it’s not as strong as will cause less harm to the delicate skin around your eyes.

How to hide scars and dark spots:

If you have an uneven skin tone or if you have scars, this explanation is just for you.

To hide these skin problems you should choose a more solid concealer, with is thick texture and that’s opaque, which contains less oil. This kind of concealer lasts longer.

This is how it’s done:

  1. Choose a concealer that’s the same shade of your foundation makeup or half a shade lighter to make sure it blends well with the rest of your face.
  2. Apply the thick concealer with a brush, covering the whole problematic area. By the way, I recommend you start with just a small amount and add if it doesn’t fully conceal the problematic areas.
  3. Lightly dampen a makeup sponge and squeeze it to get a damp but not wet sponge, and gently pat the area you applied the concealer to while blending it in.
  4. For the perfect finish touch and to set the concealer, apply a thin layer of powder by patting it with a powder puff. It’s important to pat it and not rub it to make sure you don’t remove a layer of concealer.

How to conceal redness and pimples:

If your skin has redness, you should use a green concealer to neutralize the color and hide the infection. It’s very important to use it gently and to apply a thin layer of makeup that matches your skin tone, so you don’t create green spots on your face.

This is how it’s done:

  1. Using a concealer brush or a clean finger {very important in order to prevent an additional infection}, apply a thin layer of green concealer on the red area and blend it outward. The center of the red area should be the most covered area.
  2. Gently pat the area you covered until it’s completely covered and your skin tone looks even.
  3. Apply makeup that matches your skin tone to hide the green concealer color.
  4. Finish by powdering the area to set the concealer and to prevent oily skin.

>>Recommendations for my two favorite concealers<<

MAC Concealer Final + maybeline green concealer = love it

MAC Studio Finish Concealer I absolutely love this concealer and I wouldn’t dare to replace it. I discovered it at least three years ago, and haven’t found anything that compares to it since then. Even though it’s a cream, it’s light-weight and manages to cover even the most difficult skin flaws without it looking cakey. The concealer is waterproof {it really is! } and is great for concealing dark under-eye circles, and also for concealing redness, pimples and even birthmarks. It’s a little more expensive than other concealers you could find on sale in drug stores, but in my opinion it’s worth the investment – not only do you use less of the product to achieve perfect coverage, it also has enough product for good few months!

Maybelline Cover Stick Green Concealer – I bought this concealer when I was abroad and it did a great job with the redness I had, but I’ve tried many types of green concealers from different companies and they were all good so if you can’t get this one {I’m not sure they sell it in Israel} there are other great ones available
