Digital Courses – How to Tell if a Digital Course is Worth the Investment or Just a Bluff

Online courses have plenty of advantages – they exist on almost any topic, they allow you to learn at your own pace, wherever and whenever it is convenient, and no less important – the subject material can be revisited over and over. But with the insane amount of online courses we are exposed to on a daily basis, how are we able to distinguish which digital course is actually good and meets our needs, and which course is just a bluff?

I’m a firm believer in online courses and their value – when they are truly successful. Personally, I have learned so much thanks to these types of courses, and I’m sure I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for such helpful courses, at least I wouldn’t have arrived as fast as I did. After all, while almost all of the information is scattered throughout the web, it is possible to try and piece together the puzzle, but in most cases, once we gather information from different sources we still have no idea how to proceed or what path is right for us, especially when the sources of information are different, and may even conflict.

And that's exactly the magic of a good digital course – – it is aimed and arranged to focus on the tools that help lead you to your ultimate goal.

When I decided I wanted to enhance my abilities, I knew I could apply for a course that would help me achieve my goals, but I found the courses available in the more traditional format were limiting in terms of time and place, and also quite pricey. So instead of taking that route, I searched and turned to those who inspire me most with my questions.

5 Tips for choosing the right digital course for you | online courses

There have been a few times when I found myself in some courses who weren’t any good, but in the end, I learned to search and find the type of courses that precisely fit my needs. With time, I found the best digital courses created by content creators who I felt were professional enough to provide me the tools to boost my business.

I mean, these content creators have already reached their goals, which are not far from the ones I dream of reaching, and not only did they do it so well – they also share their strategic and practical knowledge. I think that’s so amazing!

I believe in online courses so much so, that for over a year I have invested a crazy amount of time to create my premium photography and photo editing course, designed with the intention to help others specialize in the field. I am excited to share everything I have learned over the years in the hopes of inspiring, empowering, and saving my students time and money – because I remember how much I appreciated other content creators who gave me the tools to develop myself and streamline my business.

Following a slew of publications and ads that have recently been popping up on my screen, selling sparkling dreams via online courses, I decided to discuss online courses in my Instagram Stories, and realized that most common question raised was  “how do you avoid falling into the trap when applying for online courses?”. Therefore, I felt the need to write a short and easy guide on the subject matter. So, here are five guidelines that help me choose online courses that are worth my time and money.

Tips for Successfully Choosing an Online Course

1. Read the course curriculum carefully

Okay, so you’ve decided to acquire a new skill, or enrich your knowledge in a particular field, and have started looking for online courses in the field. Congratulations! The first thing I recommend you do is to carefully read the full curriculum offered by the course, and make sure it really provides the basic knowledge and the practical tools for you to achieve your goal. Find out how many chapters the course is composed of, what topics will be discussed in the lessons, and whether there are any reference materials that will help you to implement the material taught in the course. Also, try and see if there is a sample lesson you can review, so you can understand the nature of the course and whether it is really right for you. After all, the landing pages of digital courses often address a lot of promises – but the real question is whether the course actually lives up to them.

2. Read about the lecturer

When we buy a product, especially when it comes to an expensive product, we usually know the brand or the manufacturer, and if we don’t, we find out before purchasing to be sure that the product we are buying is worth the price. In that sense, a digital course is equally a product. If the curriculum looks good to you, I highly recommend reading the about the creator of the course, the lecturer, before committing to the course or paying for it. What things should you check out? Their background, their relation to the subject being taught in the course, their experience in the field, and the nature of their works or any other products they may have launched.

3. Read additional content and other tutorials published by the lecturer

Another way to get an idea of the quality of the course and its value is to read free content and tutorials published by the creator of the course. By reading through tutorials in blogs, experimenting with free mini-courses, listening to podcasts, or watching webinars, you will be able to better understand the teaching style of the lecturer, be familiar with his / her teaching ability, and evaluate their ability to deliver. Free content and tutorials are almost always relatively limited, but if they are of any value, they usually are an indication of the premium online course by the same creator {which in most cases is far more comprehensive}.

4. Inquire with students taking the course

If you’re still unsure about the course, you can always consult with people who have already interacted with the course’s creator – whether they are currently taking the course you are interested in taking, other courses by the same creator, or other kinds of clients. Often you will find students’ reviews on the course’s landing page, Facebook page, or Instagram. Another way to find an opinion about the course is to look up the name of the course on Google and see if anyone has written a review/opinion on it. You can also turn to relevant Facebook groups to find out if anyone has tried the course and what their opinion about it might be.

5. After all that, trust your gut!

Do you feel confident and excited to take this course, or is there something that’s causing you to question its credibility? Does the content offered by the course seem practical? Is the price too good to be true? After you’ve checked out all of the above, your best bet would be to trust your own intuition.

I hope this advice will help you in choosing the right online course for you.
