ISRAEL : American Brunch at NOLA American Bakery

If there’s something I really love, it’s concept restaurants that know what they’re doing.

The kind that from the second you walk in make you feel like you walked into a different world, a world that’s different from the one that’s right outside of the restaurant’s front doors.

That’s exactly what NOLA is like, a coffee shop-bakery with roots deep in the American dream, or to be exact, the New Orleans one.

60’s music, led by the Beach Boys, the homey furniture and the amazing looking pastry display that conquered my heart the second we walked in; and to really complete the whole atmosphere – all of the employees were dressed in accordance with the innocent American dream from back in the day.

We arrived there from brunch mid-week and we were surprised to see it was packed, which was a very good sign.

After quickly reviewing the menu and a quick glance at the tables around, I decided to order the House Special {55 NIS}, from the breakfast menu, and the NOLA Hurricane cocktail {38 NIS}; and Daniel ordered the Deli Sandwich {54 NIS}, from the toasted sandwiches menu and a small cup of freshly squeezed orange juice {14 NIS}.

We couldn’t believe how fast they served us our dishes, and that was just perfect – because we were starving!

The cocktail I ordered was made from orange juice and pineapple, Amarena, Rum and Southern Comfort, and it was perfect for the brunch I fantasized about… not too sweet, not too bitter – made exactly the right way. There’s no doubt that it’s fun starting a day off with a cocktail like this one…

The House Special is a big portion, with two sunny-side-up eggs, liquid at just the right amount, and charred on the bottom like I love, 2 slices of toast slathered with butter and a yummy and big vegetable salad {in my opinion, there was too much dressing – I like my salad more “fresh”, especially when the products are so good}.

The highlight of the dish was, without a doubt, the Hash Browns ??? , amazing potato fritters, well flavored, crispy on the outside and so soft inside, covered with a thick blanket of melted cheeses with mushrooms and caramelized onions – yummy!

And as if that wasn’t enough – in the center of the plate there was a ball of extra creamy cheese, which reminded me how much better real cream cheese is than the low-fat imitation.

Well, ok, we didn’t come here to go on a diet…

The Deli sandwich is a sandwich made from two slices of toasted grain bread {they were also buttery and extra crispy} covered with a spicy and prickly mustard spread {like mustard should be} with slices of high-quality corned beef {although we would’ve enjoyed a little more of it on the sandwich}, lettuce and slices of tomato.

Alongside the sandwich they served an amazing homemade coleslaw salad and pickles which would’ve fit in even better if they were the “pimply” version, the Carnegie Deli style.

Of course, after seeing what sweets were waiting for us, we decided not to completely clean our plates and leave enough room for desserts.

Daniel decided to leave the dessert decisions up to me, but threw a few hints about a giant blueberry muffin {14 NIS} he saw when we walked into the cafe.

When I stood in front of the display case again, I felt like a little girl who had to choose just one thing – how is that even possible?

NOLA’s display was so full with sweets and the variety was dazzling! Chocolate? Whipped cream? Muffins? Marshmallow?

At the end I couldn’t stop myself and I had to order two desserts, especially since the S’mores {18 NIS} which was covered in tiny marshmallows didn’t stop staring at me and because I really didn’t want to disappoint Daniel and not get the dreamy muffin he had his eye on from the second we walked in…

Besides, when the prices are this good, you really shouldn’t settle for just one dessert. ?

When Daniel saw the waitress come with two desserts, his eyes widened – there were times he was forced to compromise and give up his favorite muffins because I always prefer other desserts. ?

Since I’m not a big fan of blueberry muffins, I let Daniel judge it and this is how he described it: the muffin was light and very airy with a hard crust, just as it should be, and there was also a generous amount of blueberries that added a great tartness to the sweetness of the dough. He even said it was the best blueberry muffin he ate lately, and said that it was much better than the ones that Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts sell.

There’s no doubt this guy can identify a good blueberry muffin when he comes across one 😉

The S’mores was as delicious as it looked – crispy crust, with a generous chocolate layer on it and a lot of little marshmallows! It was super sweet!

There’s no doubt that we’ll go back to NOLA – the service, atmosphere and food were all excellent, especially if you’re longing for the innocent American dream ב
