Taking Pleasure Seriously

Spring Cleaning : How To Clean Hair Brushes And Combs

Passover is coming up and along with it comes the panic to clean everything.

If you’re one of the hardcore Passover cleaners – then you probably already divided the cleaning chores among the household members – cleaning the kitchen closets, the windows, the fridge and even your car….

But what about your hair brushes?

It’s funny how we sometimes ignore the most basic things from our daily routines…

I’m embarrassed to admit it, but I’ve never cleaned my brushes and combs.

It’s not that I was too lazy to do it – it’s just that nobody ever talks about it! I had no clue that there’s even such a thing as cleaning hair brushes.

When I say cleaning hair brushes, I don’t mean the instinctive act of pulling the hairs out that accumulate in the brushes and combs after using them… I mean thoroughly cleaning them in way that will make your hair accessories look brand new and will make your hair look better than ever.

If you look at your brushes and combs closely, you’ll see that besides the hairs looped around them, there’s also a layer of dirt that accumulates from leftovers of hair products {serum, dry shampoo, hair creams etc.}, scalp grease, dead skin and even dust mites {I know – it’s disgusting!}.

We’re not really aware of it, especially because it doesn’t really pop out, but every time we wash our hair and brush it with the same dirty hair accessories, we’re basically returning all the dirt and leftovers from our old hair products back on to our clean hair.

Such a shame, isn’t it?

Instead of throwing out your old brushes and buying new ones, I highly recommend thoroughly cleaning your hairbrush at least once a month, but if you have the time to do it every week – your hair will thank you for it.

What do you need?

1. A pencil, pen or any other long and pointy object.

2. Scissors.

3. An old toothbrush {I only had the head of an electric toothbrush, but the regular ones are much easier to use because of the long handle…}.

4. Your shampoo.

5. Baking soda.

6. A large bowl with warm water or a sink stopper.

Step 1 – Remove the hairs

The easiest way to remove hairs is by using a pointy object, like a pencil – insert it as close as possible to the cushion of the brush and then lift it, pulling out the hairs that moved up and throw them away.

If you’re cleaning round brushes used for hair blowouts – lift the hairs from the brush the same way and use scissors to cut the hair along the brush to release them more easily.

Step 2 – Prepare the bath for the brushes and combs

Fill up a big bowl or the bathroom sink with warm water, add 3 tablespoons of baking soda and 2 tablespoons of shampoo, and mix.

Place all of the brushes and combs into the bath and soak them for 15 minutes {it’s not recommended to wet brushes with wooden handles since it could ruin the wood, so if you care about your handles – skip this step}.

Step 3 – Deep clean them

After 15 minutes, remove the brush or comb from the bath, and rub the cushion of the brush and the fibers using a toothbrush.

I recommend dipping the toothbrush in the bath solution several times.

If you skipped the step before because you have a wooden brush, this is the time to rub the brushes’ cushion and fibers with the solution and try to avoid contact between the water and the wood.

Step 4 – Wash and dry

Wash the brushes one after the other under running water to completely remove the solution.

After that, place the brushes on a dry towel, with the cushions faced down, and let them air-dry for around 1 hour.
