Taking Pleasure Seriously

Spring Cleaning For Your Makeup Bag

Spring is already here and you know what that means – the universal cleaning scare is officially starting! ๐Ÿ™‚ For us, in Judaism, Passover is the ultimate excuse to clean and for renewal and in the rest of the world itโ€™s simply called “spring cleaning”โ€ฆ same, same, different name.

I must admit, organizing and cleaning arenโ€™t the things that are at the top of my mind every day. Most of the time Iโ€™m busy with work and studying, and I prefer to devote my spare time to things that give me pleasure and are pampering – and cleaning the house isnโ€™t really one of them ๐Ÿ˜‰ But thereโ€™s certainly something about the spring that even makes me get stuck with the cleaning bug. The truth is, after I last arranged my wardrobe, I fell in love with the idea of โ€‹โ€‹doing a thorough declutter and decided that when thereโ€™s enough time, Daniel and I will seriously work on decluttering the whole house.

It took a lot of time (almost 6 months, but whoโ€™s counting ๐Ÿ˜‰ } and we finally managed to find a day and get the job done – & damn, it feels good!

This time, even my makeup bag, which was on the brink of explosion, wasnโ€™t left behind. Donโ€™t get me wrong, I'm very careful about throwing out expired, dry or broken products on a regular basis, but I also felt that my makeup bag needed “decluttering” from products I no longer use and just take up space. Besides, it's always fun to make room for new and interesting products.

If your makeup bag didnโ€™t go through spring cleaning yet – it's good that you got to this post! ๐Ÿ™‚ Simply follow the next steps and recommendations in this guide, and soon your makeup collection will be so brilliant and easy to use…

The first two steps to “decluttering” your makeup stash are exactly the same as “decluttering” your wardrobe

FIRST STEP –

When you decide to do a thorough cleaning, the best thing is to remove all makeup products {including brushes, sponges and all other accessories). If you use a makeup bag, and it's still in good condition – move it to the laundry basket, so it will also get a good cleaning. If you have a large makeup corner, clean all the boxes and storage containers well.

This is also the time to do a serious cleaning for all of the brushes and sponges you may be a little lazy to clean regularly {Ew! Your facial skin isnโ€™t really forgiving for such dirtโ€ฆ}. If you donโ€™t really know what brush cleaning is, see this video.

SECOND STEP –

Sort out all of the products according to categories – basic products, lipsticks, eye shadows, etc. This allows you to get a full picture of your stash and it will be easier for you to get rid of products that are no longer in use. Donโ€™t hesitate to transfer the products that are still in good to your friends ๐Ÿ™‚ One woman's trash is another oneโ€™s treasure…

THIRD STEP –

It's time to see which products are still worth using, and which ones to throw away – and fast!

For years, I had no idea that makeup products could go bad… I would store makeup products I bought and I would get bummed out to throw them away because they were expensive or almost full, thinking that maybe in the future I would actually want to use them; And then I discovered that just like food, makeup also has an expiry date – and it's probably much shorter than you think.

To find out how long each product can last, look for this symbol on the product – it actually represents the amount of time the product can be used once itโ€™s opened {the letter M represents “months” and the number represents the number of months}. Note that there are products that have an exact expiry date {regardless of the time you opened the product}, usually natural makeup and beauty products.

If you donโ€™t remember exactly when you opened each product, try to check if the texture has changed {dried out or more liquidy} or if the smell is a bit strange – it's a sure sign to get rid of it. In the future, you should remember more or less when you started using the product.

For your convenience, I have prepared a short and useful guide that summarizes the expiry dates of most makeup products :

FOURTH (AND LAST) STEP –

At this stage, you are left with a smaller makeup collection but much more useful and healthy to use.

Clean each of the products and put them neatly in their storage place. If you happen to have a powdered product that broke and got the rest of the makeup dirty, but you really donโ€™t want to part with it – you should try this good old trick.

Good luck cleaning and Happy Spring! ๐Ÿ™‚
